Ingredients
- 1 oz (30ml) peach schnapps
- 1 oz (30ml) Southern Comfort
- 3 oz (90ml) orange juice (freshly squeezed provides the best flavor)
- 1 splash (approximately ¼ oz) grenadine syrup
- Orange slice for garnish
- Orange-colored sugar for rimming (optional)
- Ice cubes
- Cold water (for preparing the sugar rim)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare Your Glass
If you’re opting for the sugar-rimmed presentation, begin by preparing your glass. Pour a small amount of cold water onto a small plate. On another plate, spread your orange-colored sugar in an even layer. Dip the rim of your glass first into the water, then immediately into the sugar, rotating gently to ensure even coverage. Set aside to dry slightly while you prepare the rest of the cocktail.
Step 2: Prepare Your Ingredients
Measure out all your liquid ingredients using a jigger or measuring tool. Having everything ready before you begin mixing ensures a smoother process and more consistent results. If using fresh oranges for juice, squeeze them now. Cut additional orange slices for garnish, making a small slit in each so they can perch on the rim of the glass.
Step 3: Fill Your Shaker
Add a generous amount of ice to your cocktail shaker – typically filling it about halfway creates the ideal temperature without over-diluting your drink. Pour in the measured peach schnapps, Southern Comfort, and orange juice.
Step 4: Shake Thoroughly
Secure the top of your cocktail shaker and shake vigorously for approximately 15-20 seconds. This not only chills the drink but also properly integrates the ingredients and creates a slight frothiness that enhances texture. The outside of the shaker should become frosty cold.
Step 5: Prepare Your Serving Glass
Fill your prepared highball or collins glass about two-thirds full with fresh ice cubes. Using new ice rather than the ice from your shaker ensures your drink stays cold longer without becoming watered down.
Step 6: Strain and Pour
Using your strainer, pour the shaken mixture over the ice in your prepared glass, leaving about a quarter-inch of space at the top for the grenadine.
Step 7: Create the Sunset Effect
Now comes the signature moment – carefully pour a splash of grenadine down the inside of the glass or over the back of a bar spoon. Because grenadine is denser than the other ingredients, it will naturally sink to the bottom, creating a beautiful gradient effect that resembles a sunset – from deep red at the bottom transitioning to orange and yellow at the top.
Step 8: Garnish
Place your orange slice on the rim of the glass or float it on top of the drink. This adds a fresh aroma and visual appeal that completes the presentation.
Notes
While not a cooked cocktail, there are several technical considerations that significantly impact the quality of your Georgia Peach:
- Temperature matters: Always use well-chilled ingredients and plenty of ice in your shaker. A properly chilled cocktail not only tastes better but maintains its layered effect longer.
- Pouring technique for grenadine: The success of the sunset effect depends on adding the grenadine last and pouring it slowly. Using the back of a bar spoon to guide the grenadine down the inside of the glass provides the most controlled descent.
- Ice quality: Use clear, fresh ice cubes for serving. Cloudy ice can contain impurities that affect both taste and visual appeal.
- Shaking intensity: Shake with enthusiasm but control. The goal is proper integration and chilling, not excessive dilution.
